There are two types of people in the world, those that enjoy the muted tranquillity and calmness of neutral tones and those that just want to colour their world…. Of course then there is us, who want a foot in each camp!
We know that you love our natural fibre brushes because they are just that – natural! We love natural fibres for other reasons too; they are long-lasting, biodegradable, plastic-free, carbon neutral and just generally nicer to use and look at!
While we love our brushes and the earthy palette we are surrounded by, sometimes everyone just needs a burst of colour to brighten their day🌈
So we are dipping our toe into the world of colour.
Behind every one of our handmade brushes are the ethics and sustainable practises that are ECOMAX and this includes our coloured Spa Range. Which is why we are really excited by our new innovative range of coloured body brushes and how we have been able to add colour without compromising.
Wouldn’t it be lovely to see everyone ditching the plastic and moving to natural fibres! So these are for those that still want a splash of colour with their natural twist. We hope these will inspire a new generation of change makers to join us towards a more sustainable future.
What is the dying process?
When deciding to go down the path of coloured fibres we looked at all the options available, we wanted to tick all the environmental and ethical boxes. But the reality is never as easy or even as black and white as we would like it to be and sometimes choosing one option over another can lead to simply shifting the problems elsewhere.
Natural dyes are still very expensive and they require substantial areas of arable land and water resources to grow. Add to this the used of heavy metal ‘fixers’ to maintain colour fastness and natural dyes do not quite stack up, at least yet, as a sustainable option.
New generation reactive dyes, referred to as Low Impact Dyes, are at top of the eco-friendly list. They contain no heavy metals or AZO’s and use 90% less chemicals than other synthetic dyes. As the majority of the dye is absorbed into the fibre, there is far less runoff waste elements than traditional direct dyes.
Our dyes are certified with the highest independent textile compliance standard of Zero Discharge Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC), bluesign® and permitted and certified safe to use under Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).
Our wonderful producers in Sri Lanka have increased the sustainability of dyeing the natural fibres by adding in a filtration system that removes the small amount of waste in the water after dyeing. This allows the water to be reused, either back in the dyeing process or to water our new gardens at the Kurunegala facility. Here we are trialling the growing of different types of loofahs to provide new sustainable jobs for the future in the area.
